Mahaska County YMCA At A Glance…

The Mahaska County YMCA has been serving the Mahaska County area for over 105 years. Throughout those 105 years we have continually touched lives and embedded memories. The YMCA was established in 1903 in a 3 story building on the square in Oskaloosa. As reported in the Oskaloosa Daily Herald on Wednesday, April 29, 1903 the Mahaska County YMCA was delivered a dedication speech from President Roosevelt on the evening of Tuesday, April 28, 1903. President Roosevelt believed in our missions and the goals of commitment we were and still are achieving with the community. The beautiful YMCA that was located at our town square was housed with all the up-to-date furnishings, dormitory necessities, and sporting equipment. After 66 years of continued service to the community, the Mahaska County YMCA moved to its existing location, 414 North 3rd Street. Since the movement in 1969 the Mahaska County YMCA has continued to thrive and serve.

Today the YMCA is still committed to serving the people of Mahaska County. The YMCA is striving towards a unified local community with many collaborations and acceptances of area industries. The staff is committed to strengthening the YMCA mission and vision in the facility and in the community. The YMCA focuses on 4 core values and a very strong mission that we follow and expect the general public to respect. Our mission is, “To put Christian Principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The 4 core values are: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. In all that we do with the youth, in sporting venues, daily usage, or casual discussion; our values are introduced to them in some way. The staff and board members of the YMCA hope that with a focus and a goal for our youth we can help support the parents’ and schools’ efforts; and together we can create strong committed leaders for tomorrow. The YMCA’s commitment is to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.

The YMCA is the only organization in Mahaska County that can offer so many things to so many people. The YMCA serves individuals from 6 weeks old to the seniors of our community. The YMCA has been blessed by individuals and businesses, with the funding to house a state of the art fitness area. In addition to the fitness room for adults, we offer the opportunity of private swim lessons, aerobic classes, lap swimming, a safe haven for your precious gift of children, and loving Christian emphasized daycare and day camps. For our youth we provide instruction in basketball, volleyball, swimming lessons, soccer, gymnastics, group exercise, and flag football. The YMCA also serves as a place for seniors to gather and stay committed to keeping their youthful spirits and bodies through water exercise, fitness room programs, silver sneakers programs and afternoon delights (a fellowship time).

The Mahaska County YMCA continues to make improvements; we have added new fitness classes (cycling, Body Assault, Ab Lab) to support the growing needs of a healthy lifestyle, we have personal trainers on our staff to help out those members who need a boost or just accountability, and we have our weight loss program every year to help out and support those who need guided direction to lose those extra pounds.
Recently, we have taken on the responsibility as the liaison to the community preschools and the financial responsibility of the State Grant Monies. The preschools involved included: Kids Korner, YMCA, and Sunshine. Together we have all achieved a huge milestone in acquiring the stature of a State Funded Preschool Program. This serves to be another positive step towards a unified Community Childcare and Preschool with the YMCA as the spearhead.

The Mahaska County YMCA is here to serve in any way possible. The staff and board members of the YMCA look forward to serving the citizens of Mahaska County. We thank our existing members for their continued support and commitment to making Oskaloosa and its surrounding communities on the leading edge of today’s society.
