1. Spinning Room Construction – On the second floor of the YMCA, a new cycling room was constructed. What used to be an old cluttered storage room was transformed into a top notch exercise facility. Installed was a hardwood floor, new lighting, 8 stationary bicycles, and a sound system. The room was made possible by donated staff hours, donated floor materials and donations by community members for the purchase of the cycles. 2. Accomplishments of the Swim Team and Gymnastics Team – The swim team competed very strong this year. There were 70 swimmers; within that group, we had 2 records that were broken from years past, many first place finishes, a very competitive state meet showing and 16 children who qualified through their times achieved to swim at the regional level in Minneapolis Minnesota. The group of swimmers that swam at Regionals represented the YMCA very well and even brought home some top places. The Gymnastics Team was very strong again this year, there were 35 children involved in the Oskaloosa Aerials Gymnastics Team. The Gymnastics team brought home top honors from every meet that the attended as well as individuals bests and top places every meet. The State meet was held in Sioux Center, Iowa and we had 3 children that placed 1st in the All-Around with many children placing 1st place finishes on individual events. 3. 4 year old Voluntary Preschool – The Childcare Director Debbie Cummings embarked on a very stringent accomplishment this year of collaborating with the Oskaloosa Community School System to establish a cooperation with the area preschools. This year our community began running a 4 year old voluntary preschool venue that brought 5 area preschools together to offer the children of Mahaska County the best possible education at a very affordable rate to families. This preschool is a state funded effort which will allow every 4 year old child in the Oskaloosa School District the opportunity to attend Preschool for free. The YMCA is the acting liason for all the preschools and is responsible to the state for reporting back all of our numbers of children and their progresses along with making sure that the other preschools are doing the same. 4. Swimming Lesson Participation Increase – In the past the YMCA has always had very strong swimming lesson participation, however over the last several years we had noticed a decrease in the amount of children who were attending our classes. Last year through the implementation of staff changes and stronger organizational skills the YMCA is happy to report that our numbers have rebounded back to those high participation numbers and are continuing to grow each session. 5. Personal Training – This year we have added 3 personal trainers to our staff at the YMCA. These trainers are very busy with clients and sometimes overbooked. The YMCA hasn’t ever seen such a need for so many trainers or even trainers at all, but with the rising epidemic of obesity people are more and more seeing the need to stay in fit and keep themselves healthy. |
