1. My sons, attended the YMCA Day Camp during the past two summers.  They made new friends, shared new experiences, and are eager for another chance of learning and fun.  The boys are looking forward to once again attending this coming summer, I am considering sending them only 3 days per week due to the expenses involved.  The YMCA Summer Camp provides a safe and fun environment for the kids, but more importantly a stable and structured environment.

2. I cannot say enough about the Mahaska County YMCA!  Aaron Phillips and his team of Laura Sarver, Derrik Melville, Debbie Cummings, and Meghan Slay have been a huge blessing in my life and my children’s in several different ways, we are all unique and God gives us all different gifts to bless others.  I am a single mother, my children have been involved in several activities through the YMCA and I would not have been able to accomplish this on my own, it was through the scholarship program that my children have been given the opportunity to be involved in gymnastics, swimming, soccer, basketball and various other activities that are provided through the YMCA.  My children have prospered in body, mind and spirit due to the high emphasis placed on Excellency at the Mahaska County YMCA.  I have spoken to others who have been given scholarships and I know they are blessed by this generous gift.  I cannot thank you enough; your reward is in Heaven, God Bless YOU!!!

3. Last year, one of our children in daycare lost her mother to a severe car accident, which will unfortunately change her life forever.  She lived with her mother and the father was not a strong part of her life, so her Grandma and Grandpa have helped their daughter out through the years.  Throughout her life she has attended the YMCA daycare and therefore we have been a very stable place for her.  Since learning of her mother’s passing, we have contacted Hospice to come in and speak with our childcare teachers so they will know how to address the issues that will arise over the upcoming adjustments in her life, and also so Hospice will be able to work with her in understanding and acceptance of this tragic accident.  We have provided and will continue to provide the necessary steps for this little child so she will be able to move on with her live and to be a future leader in our community.

4. Just recently we supplied a full scholarship to a family who moved back into the community due to a murder in their family.  The murder was broadcast all over the media and they just couldn’t get away from the constant reminder and the pain of the loss, so they moved the family to Oskaloosa where they had other family.  Since moving here the mother of the household turned towards alcohol abuse to ease the pain of her loss.  Once realizing that her addiction has spiraled out of control, she turned herself into a treatment center and received much needed help.  With the move, she also had to give up her career and try to start a new one in Oskaloosa; this has been a very hard and painful road to walk down.  She has been unable to secure a position in Oskaloosa due to people talking about her illness.  Therefore, they have had severe money issues and the children are having a hard time adapting to very new surroundings.  The YMCA provided the family with a family scholarship, programming for the children, and spoke with different individuals in the community to help the children with getting involved.  How grateful this family has been during a horrific time in their lives.  Many times they have come in our doors to thank us for providing them with this great opportunity for their family.
