Swim Lessons: Are you a pike, eel, ray, starfish, polliwog, guppy, minnow, fish, flying fish, shark, or have no idea? Come to the Mahaska County YMCA to find out! With swimming lessons going on year-round, there has never been a better time to jump in the pool. From the novice to the experienced, we have a diverse staff of trained swim instructors that can help you reach your aquatic goals. The Mahaska County YMCA offers four swim lesson options to meet the needs of any swimmer.

Evening Group Lessons: Sessions meet twice a week for four weeks. Swimmers sign-up based on ability level so participants have similar swimming skills needing the same instruction. If your child has never taken swim lessons or you do not remember his or her swim level, this is no problem at all! Instructors are trained to evaluate ability level on the second day of lessons and will contact parents/guardians if a different session time would be more advantageous to your swimmer. These swim lesson sessions are on-going throughout the year, making this one of the most popular offerings at the Y.

Summer Group Lessons: Five sessions of summer group lessons are offered each year, starting the first week of June. These sessions last two weeks, with swimmers meeting in the morning, Monday through Thursday, for a total of eight days of instruction. These lessons are taught in the same manner as the year-round evening group lessons. Registration for these sessions begins the first week of May. Summer group lessons fill up fast, so contact the Y today!

Semi-private Lessons: Semi-private lessons are for groups of 2-3 children or adults who desire to take lessons in a smaller setting with familiar faces. These lessons are coordinated between instructors and swim lesson participants to fit a time within their schedules. This program is available year-round, with registration forms located at the front desk of the Y.

Private Lessons: Private lessons are the ultimate in personal attention and instruction. The YMCA places swimmers with qualified instructors who work with you to schedule lessons at the best time available. This program takes place year-round, with registration forms located at the front desk of the Y. Sign-up includes eight 30-minute lessons.

The class starts Monday, June 13, and will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:15-7:00 pm. Y members may attend the class at no cost but must present their Y membership card. Stroke Clinic: For new swimmers who may be considering swim team or young swim team members who are still learning all four strokes, a "Stroke Clinic" has been developed. This four-week program will teach proper competitive stroke technique in each of the four competitive strokes. Keep in mind there are variations of each stroke that swimmers can learn after they are more seasoned in performing each stroke legally, according to the USA Swimming rules.
