Freaky 5k a Hit for Runners and Walkers
On Saturday, October 27, 2012, the Mahaska County Y and co-sponsor Clow Valve Company, hosted the 1st annual Freaky 5k Run/Walk and Kids’ Fun Run at the Lacey Complex Stadium. Although cool temperatures were par for the day, over 55 participants gathered at the Stadium for the Kids’ Fun Run at 8am and 5k at 9am. With some excellent times posted in all age categories, the fun didn’t stop there. Many contestants strutted their stuff in Halloween costumes and outrageous outfits!
Fitness Director at the Mahaska County Y, Ryan Harkema, commented that “This year’s Freaky 5k has seen more participants and more support than we imagined when the planning stages for this race began back in January. We started with the thought in mind that fitness events should be as fun as they are competitive. From this foundation, the Freaky 5k was created, and everyone involved, from the volunteers, to the sponsors, to the participants, made this year’s first race one to remember. We hope to see everyone return again next year for even more fun!”
