The Oskaloosa YMCA in partnership with the Oskaloosa Community School District received a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant from the Iowa Department of Education in 2014. The purpose of the grant was to provide an afterschool program at the YMCA focused on increasing literacy and math skills, health, and technology. In order to measure the outcomes of the program, a comprehensive program evaluation was designed and implemented. This evaluation included gathering data from multiple stakeholders, and utilizing multiple measures of academic achievement in order to assess student participation and growth.
The Mahaska County YMCA and the Oskaloosa Community School District have developed an innovative new after school program with the support of 21st Century grant funding through the Department of Education and funding from United Way of Mahaska County. (To learn more about the Oskaloosa Elementary School, click here.)The program has district teaching staff and YMCA staff collaboratively providing an exciting program offering many enrichment opportunities for community youth. Three OES teachers are leading the enrichment and tutoring activities. Most of our staff associates are education majors at William Penn University or Central College, and some tutors are high school student peer mentors. Family members are encouraged to volunteer as well!
Join us as we strengthen our community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. There are scholarship opportunities for children with academic and/or financial need. DHS Child Care Assistance is accepted. Parents may also choose to register for full-time or part-time care in the program. Children receiving grant-funded scholarships are required to attend four days weekly until at least 5:15 pm. The after school program is licensed by DHS to care for up to 125 youth. We follow a 1:15 ratio for children ages 5-10 and a 1:20 ratio for children over the age of 10.
