General Facility Policies

Aquatics:

If a child fails to attend the first two (2) swim lesson class times, their spot will be offered to participants on the waiting list unless the Aquatics Coordinator is contacted.

Swim tests for patrons ages 13 and under will be conducted to ensure the safety of all swimmers. The YMCA will have two lifeguards scheduled during open swim so one can guard while the other conducts the tests. Youth may be tested weekly. The skill and age of the patron will determine any restrictions which may be imposed. To view the complete policy and color band descriptors, click here.

Holiday Closures:

The Y will be closed on the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day. The Y closes early for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. For Childcare, please refer to the Childcare handbook for a detailed look at scheduled closures.

Weather Cancellations:

During severe weather, if the Oskaloosa school system cancels classes, the Y will also cancel morning adult classes, youth classes, and preschool.

Financial Assistance:

Every day, the Mahaska County YMCA offers quality, affordable programs, and services designed to benefit people of all incomes and backgrounds. Through generous contributions, no one is turned away from the Y due to inability to pay. Check with the Executive Director for financial assistance information. All records are kept confidential.

Guest Passes:

Members may bring an unlimited guests for ONE visit each

Lockers:

Daily use is at no charge. Members must provide their own padlock. Padlocks must be removed at the end of each business day or they will be removed by staff. Permanent locker storage is available for $7/month individual and $10/month couple. Yearly rates are $84/$120 respectively.

Pool Rules:

  • The Aquatics Pool Policy, aquatics swim test, will be administered and followed for patrons 13 years of age and younger.
  • Showers are required before entering the water.
  • Diving in shallow end of pool is not allowed.
  • Backwards dives, flips, or twists are not allowed.
  • Diving blocks may not be used during open swim (Swim Team and Lessons only).
  • Street shoes are not allowed on pool deck.
  • No glass, food, or drinks on the pool deck.
  • No running, pushing, dunking or horseplay is allowed.
  • Personal flotation devices allowed in shallow end only or at lifeguard’s discretion.
  • Proper swim attire must be worn. No t-shirts, cutoffs, etc.
  • Persons with open wounds are not allowed in the pool.
  • Children under the age of 8 must be directly supervised by an adult.
  • YMCA is not liable for lost or stolen items.

Programs:

  • All program registrations must be paid in full before participation is allowed.
  • Credits or refunds may be granted with a doctor’s written excuse and the approval of the program director.
  • Programs cancelled by the Y will be rescheduled or credits/refunds will be issued.
  • Any program not meeting the required number of participants may be subject to cancellation.

Towels:

There are designated hampers to put towels in when finished.

Age Requirements

Note: The Age Requirements listed here are general guidelines. The Mahaska County YMCA reserves the right to make adjustments as needed and to determine what responsible behaviors are.

General Building:

  • Children 12 and younger must either be under the direct supervision of a parent or a responsible person of at least 16 years of age or be enrolled and participating in a Y program at that time.
  • All members must scan their membership ID cards at the front desk upon entering the facility.
  • Inappropriate language and fighting are prohibited. Violators are subject to ejection from the facility.
  • Weapons are prohibited on Mahaska County YMCA property
  • Registered sex offenders with child care and school “exclusion zone restrictions” are prohibited from Y membership and facility usage.
  • No pictures allowed in locker rooms or restrooms.
  • All schedules are subject to change.

Adult Fitness Room:

  • Youth 8 and older are allowed in the wellness center with an adult members.
  • Youth 13 and older may use the facility without supervision.

Adult Locker Rooms:

  • Members and guests age 18 and older may use the men’s and women’s locker rooms. The Y is not liable for lost or stolen items.
Boys’ and Girls’ Locker Rooms:
  • No age restrictions. The Y is not liable for lost or stolen items.

Special Needs & Family Locker Rooms:

  • Parents with children who are under 8 years old and those with special needs may use the family and special needs locker rooms. The Y is not liable for lost or stolen items.

Fitness Classes:

  • Youth 8 and older are allowed to participate in fitness classes with an adult member.

Racquetball Courts

  • Youth 13 and older may use the courts without supervision.
  • Youth 8 and older may use the courts under the direct and constant supervision of a parent or guardian.
  • Children under 3rd grade are not allowed on the courts.
  • Eye protection is strongly recommended for all racquetball play.

Swimming Pool:

  • Children 12 and younger must either be under the direct supervision of a parent or a responsible person of at least 16 years of age or be enrolled and participating in s Y program at that time.
  • Lifeguards are not responsible to supervise children. Youth in the pool who are unable to swim well must be under the direct supervision of an adult or guardian who is in the pool.
  • For the safety of YMCA members, if there is a power outage, all patrons will be asked to exit the pool until the power is restored.
